On the 26th May, 2022, Women Impacting Nigeria in partnership with the NYSC-SDGS Lagos, a special Community Development Service group under the umbrella of NYSC Lagos organised a period poverty program called “Pad A Girl”.
This project was sponsored by Women Impacting Nigeria and targeted at secondary school girls in JSS 1 – SSS 3 who are within the age range of 10-18years. 52 girls in Tai Solarin Memorial School, Festac, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, Lagos State were provided with 2 reusable cloth pads and were trained on how to make cloth pads. They were also sensitized about the benefits of these cloth pads and how to use and maintain them.
These school girls who lack the resources were taught how to make disposable pads frequently with cost effective, healthier and environmentally friendly materials.
This program helped the school girls to understand how poor sanitary materials can affect their social and mental well-being and how it can undermine their safety and dignity. It also gave them the ability to manage their period by introducing them to affordable hygienic materials to make sanitary pads.
