Some conversations are difficult to have. That does not mean we should stop having them.
Women Impacting Nigeria (WIN) is launching Breaking The Silence, a national campaign focused on survivor support, education, prevention and collective action against gender-based violence.
The campaign creates space for honest and informed conversations about the experiences, behaviours, systems and community responses connected to gender-based violence.
At the centre of the campaign is a question that deserves more attention: What can each of us do to create safer communities?
Creating space for support
When someone experiences violence, how we respond matters.
Breaking The Silence will share information and resources that encourage survivor-centred responses grounded in dignity, respect and compassion.
The campaign will not sensationalise survivors’ experiences or place responsibility for violence on those who experience it. Instead, it will focus on creating better understanding around support, available resources and responsible responses.
Moving from awareness to prevention
Awareness is important, but prevention requires knowledge and action.
Throughout the campaign, WIN will explore conversations around consent, healthy relationships, digital safety, bystander intervention and legal literacy.
These conversations are intended to help people recognise harmful behaviour, understand boundaries, respond responsibly and know where to seek credible information and support.
Building a collective response
Gender-based violence cannot be addressed by one organisation alone.
Breaking The Silence will bring attention to organisations, professionals, partners and communities contributing to prevention, survivor support, education and advocacy.
The campaign will also create opportunities for people to learn how they can contribute, whether by sharing accurate information, supporting someone appropriately, learning how to intervene safely or connecting people to credible resources.
Keeping the conversation grounded in evidence
Trust matters, especially when discussing issues as serious as gender-based violence.
WIN will prioritise credible and properly sourced information throughout the campaign. Where statistics are used, their original sources will be identified so that audiences can understand the evidence behind the conversation.
The campaign will also document relevant activities and impact as it progresses.
This conversation needs all of us
Breaking The Silence is not simply about encouraging people to speak.
It is about creating environments where people can speak without shame, where survivors are treated with dignity, where communities know how to respond, and where prevention becomes part of everyday responsibility.
The campaign is built around four commitments:
