For many women, learning to drive is more than learning how to operate a vehicle.
It can mean greater independence. It can make movement easier. It can create new possibilities in work and everyday life. And for some women, simply knowing that they can confidently get behind the wheel can change how they see what is possible for them.
This was the thinking behind Girls Behind the Wheel, a collaborative initiative between Women Impacting Nigeria (WIN) and Coscharis Mobility Limited, designed to equip women with practical driving skills, road safety knowledge and a stronger understanding of vehicle care and mobility.
The programme has now come to an end, marking the completion of a journey that moved participants from the classroom to the training grounds and behind the wheel.
Learning Before Driving
The journey began with theory.
Participants were introduced to the fundamentals of driving, road safety and responsible vehicle use. These sessions provided the knowledge they needed before moving into practical training.
The theory classes were an important part of the experience because safe driving is not simply about knowing how to operate a vehicle. It also requires understanding the road, making responsible decisions and knowing how to respond to different situations.
Taking the Lessons to the Road
Then came the practical sessions.
With professional instructors and access to training vehicles, participants had the opportunity to put what they had learned into practice.
The training centre became a space for questions, practice and improvement. Participants worked on developing their driving skills while building the confidence required to take those skills beyond the training environment.
For WIN, that practical element was particularly important.
Empowerment should not stop at inspiration. Women also need access to knowledge, skills and opportunities that they can apply in their everyday lives.
The Power of Partnership
Girls Behind the Wheel was made possible through the partnership between Women Impacting Nigeria and Coscharis Mobility Limited.
Coscharis brought its expertise in mobility and driver training to the initiative, providing certified instructors, roadworthy vehicles, training facilities and the curriculum required for the programme.
WIN supported the mobilisation and coordination of participants, communication and engagement throughout the programme, helping connect women to the opportunity and supporting the overall participant experience.
The partnership demonstrated what can happen when organisations bring different strengths to a shared goal.
More Than a Driving Programme
At its heart, Girls Behind the Wheel was about creating access.
Access to a practical skill.
Access to knowledge.
Access to an environment where women could learn without being limited by assumptions about what women can or cannot do.
For WIN, this aligns with a broader commitment to creating opportunities that support women beyond conversations and into practical, measurable experiences.
A woman learning to drive may seem like a simple thing. But the confidence that comes with acquiring that skill can extend far beyond the driver’s seat.
