Violence against women and girls is a grave violation of human rights, with immediate and long-term physical, sexual, and mental consequences. It undermines women’s overall well-being and hinders their ability to fully participate in society. The repercussions extend beyond individuals, affecting families, communities, and the nation. The economic costs include increased healthcare and legal expenses, loss of productivity, and broader impacts on national development.

The Reality in Nigeria

According to UNICEF, one in four girls and one in ten boys in Nigeria experience sexual violence before the age of 18. Additionally, six out of ten children in Nigeria will face emotional, physical, or sexual abuse before adulthood, with half of them experiencing physical violence.

Our Commitment

At Women Impacting Nigeria (WIN), we are dedicated to ending gender-based violence by raising awareness of its causes and consequences. We advocate for changing societal norms and behaviors among men and boys while promoting gender equality and women’s rights. Our approach is holistic, incorporating education, community service, and preventive measures to reduce the incidence of gender-based violence.

Programs of Impact

Digital Skills for Her:

• We have trained over 10,000 women across Nigeria in cities including Abuja, Akure, Jos, Kano, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Oyo, Uyo, and Calabar. This program empowers women with digital skills to enhance their employability and independence.

Empowered Self-Defense Workshop:

• Our monthly workshops equip women with self-defense strategies and skills. Over 1,500 women have attended these empowering sessions.

WIN Gender-Based Violence Education Initiative:

• This preventive initiative addresses sexual assault in primary and secondary schools through age-appropriate education. We provide students with the tools and knowledge to understand and prevent violence in their communities and guide them on accessing support if needed.

Grassroots Sensitization Program:

• We raise awareness about gender-based violence, rape, and sexual assault, and inform communities about the services WIN provides. Over 1,300 individuals have been sensitized to the prevalence and impact of gender-based violence.

WIN Survivors Support Program:

• We support survivors of rape and sexual violence by offering access to shelters, medical and legal aid, and counseling. Our goal is to ensure the physical and mental recovery of victims. We also provide encouragement, counseling, and basic needs for abuse survivors.

Him for Her Program:

• This program educates men and boys about violence against women, positive masculinity, and how to be allies for women and girls. By fostering awareness and changing attitudes, we aim to prevent violence and promote gender equality.
