In contribution to women’s health care in Nigeria, and the fulfillment of SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being); Women Impacting Nigeria conducted a free Breast cancer screening program on Saturday, 12th, November 2022 at the Elegushi Community.
The breast cancer awareness program was targeted at women between the ages of 21-65 and also included a free cervical cancer screening.
There is a high incidence of breast cancer in Nigeria, and studies have shown that the majority of Nigerian women, both in rural and urban areas, have little or no knowledge about the risk factors and symptoms of the disease.
Breast cancer is increasingly becoming a threat to Nigerian women, and visiting health care facilities to get screened is also low, due to funds restraints and lack of awareness.
WIN proffered a solution to the two fold problem by bringing the program to the women of Elegushi community. Apart from the free screening, beneficiaries were also sensitized on breast cancer prevention and early detection.
WIN believes that the high incidence and mortality rate associated with breast cancer in Nigeria can be reduced by creating more awareness about the disease. WIN also welcomes support and partnership opportunities with other organizations to bring subsequent screening programs to other communities in Nigeria.
With proper education of women in both rural and urban areas and affordable screening programmes such as this, Nigeria will be on its way to seeing the SDG goal 3 fulfilled among its female populace.
