WOMEN IMPACTING NIGERIA

HUMAN RIGHTS MOVEMENTS IN NIGERIA

Recently I visited my nephews’ school for the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meeting in place of my sister; their mother. I arrived at the school earlier than the said time and decided to do a tour of the classes and a little of the school grounds; ok, only a few classes actually as the school is a fairly large one. There was this class I stumbled on and listened in from the window. A young lady was in charge, the subject was Civic Education; she was teaching them about the fundamental human rights. As I watched and listened to her deliver the lesson, I noticed how the students paid her rapt attention, answered questions on demand and echoed her words when necessary. I felt this tug in my heart. All through the rest of the day I reflected on that particular lesson; our rights, how far we have come as a nation and a continent and the various individuals who made it their life cause to defend these rights.

So today in commemoration of Human Rights Day, at WIN we would like to celebrate individual activists who fought for the respect and exercise of fundamental human rights in Nigeria. Notable individuals worthy of mention with respect to this cause include,

A human rights activist, simply put, is a selfless human being who understands that the basic and fundamental rights of every human must be guaranteed and exercised, regardless of any barriers, and the limitations of the same rights. This cause is one every individual should be involved in, after all, we are to be our brother’s keeper. Happy Human Rights Day!
